About Brightara Hub

We believe hobbies aren't luxuries reserved for people with endless free time. They're essential ingredients for a fulfilling life, accessible to everyone willing to explore.

How We Started

Brightara Hub began in 2019 when our founder, Eleanor Walsh, noticed a pattern among her friends and colleagues. Many expressed feeling stuck in work-home routines, wanting to try new things but overwhelmed by options or unsure where to begin.

Eleanor had spent years exploring various hobbies herself—from amateur astronomy to pottery to wild swimming. Through trial and error, she'd learned what worked for different personalities, schedules, and budgets. She'd also built an extensive network of hobby groups and instructors across Oxfordshire.

What started as informal coffee chats helping friends find their footing evolved into something more structured. People kept asking for introductions, recommendations, and guidance. Within a year, Eleanor was dedicating weekends to these conversations. By 2020, it had become clear this needed to be a proper service.

We've since grown from Eleanor's solo operation into a small team of consultants, each bringing expertise in different hobby domains. What hasn't changed is our fundamental approach: thoughtful conversations, honest recommendations, and connections that genuinely help.

Our Mission

We exist to help people find and sustain hobbies that genuinely enhance their wellbeing. Not what's trendy or looks impressive, but what actually brings them satisfaction and growth.

We measure success by whether someone is still engaged with their chosen hobby six months later, feeling enriched rather than pressured by it.

Our Values

  • Authenticity - We recommend what we genuinely believe suits you, not what earns us the most commission
  • Accessibility - Hobbies should be available to everyone, regardless of income or background
  • Sustainability - We focus on pursuits you can maintain long-term, not fleeting enthusiasms
  • Diversity - There are countless ways to spend leisure time meaningfully; we celebrate all of them
  • Community - Shared interests connect people in powerful ways; we facilitate these bonds

The Team

Our consultants come from varied backgrounds but share a passion for helping others discover meaningful pursuits.

Sarah's background in art therapy informs her approach to creative hobbies. She helps people overcome the "I'm not artistic" barrier and discover forms of creative expression that genuinely resonate, from photography to woodworking to creative writing.

Raj Patel

Consultant - Intellectual & Social Hobbies

Raj worked as a university librarian before joining our team. He specializes in hobbies centered on learning and social connection—book clubs, language learning, board gaming, debate societies, and similar pursuits.

Our Approach

We've developed a methodology based on years of experience and hundreds of conversations.

Deep Listening

We don't use automated quizzes or personality tests. Instead, we have genuine conversations about your life, interests, constraints, and aspirations. Details matter—your commute, your energy patterns, your social needs, your budget.

Pattern Recognition

Through experience, we've learned to spot patterns. Someone who loves solving complex problems at work might thrive with strategy games or woodworking. Someone who finds their job isolating might benefit from group activities like choir or team sports.

Honest Assessment

We'll tell you if something probably won't suit you, even if you think it sounds appealing. If you're drawn to marathon running but struggle with consistency, we might suggest shorter, more frequent runs or a running club for accountability.

Facilitated Connections

We don't just hand you a list and wish you luck. We make introductions, arrange trial sessions, and ensure you have a proper entry point rather than showing up somewhere feeling awkward and uncertain.

Follow-Through

We check in after you've started to see how it's going. Sometimes small adjustments make a big difference. Other times, a hobby genuinely isn't working and we need to reconsider.

Long-Term Perspective

Hobbies evolve. What captivates you initially might change over time. We support this evolution rather than treating it as failure, helping you navigate transitions as your interests develop.

What We Believe About Hobbies

There's a lot of noise around hobbies these days. Social media showcases perfectly curated pursuits. Self-help books promise hobbies will solve all your problems. Commerce pushes expensive equipment and courses.

We see hobbies differently. They're not about optimization or productivity. They're about enjoyment, growth, and connection. A hobby doesn't need to make you money or look impressive. It just needs to bring you satisfaction.

We also believe hobbies aren't one-size-fits-all. What works wonderfully for one person might bore another. The key is finding genuine fit rather than forcing yourself into something because it seems like you should enjoy it.

Finally, we believe in starting small and simple. You don't need perfect conditions, expensive equipment, or large blocks of free time. You need curiosity and willingness to try. Everything else can develop over time.
